Canada's 700-Item Tariff List Targets $27.6 Billion in U.S. Imports

Canada will impose retaliatory tariffs of 15, 25, and 50 percent on over 700 American products starting September 8, targeting $27.6 billion in U.S. imports as the trade war escalates. The tariffs respond to U.S. Section 338 and Section 232 duties and target sectors like steel, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp and paper, and electronics. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne and other ministers announced the plan Tuesday after trade talks collapsed Friday night. Prime Minister Mark Carney pledged "dollar-for-dollar" retaliation following the breakdown in negotiations. The tariff list includes a wide range of goods, from fish, cheese, and honey to machinery, vehicles, steel, aluminum, and furniture.
