Poilievre demands release of failed Canada-U.S. trade deal text, reopen parliament

Opposition Leader Pierre Poilievre demanded Monday that the Prime Minister release the text of the failed Canada-U.S. trade deal and reconvene parliament, saying Canadians deserve to see the rejected agreement. Poilievre, speaking in Windsor, said he has not directly spoken with Prime Minister Mark Carney. He argued he would have negotiated differently, proposing the 1965 Auto Pact to require automakers to produce one car in Canada for every car sold there, potentially doubling production for both countries. Trade talks were suspended Friday after Carney accused the U.S. of adding last-minute restrictions on Canada's trade deals and cultural protections. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer claimed American offers included tariff cuts on lumber, steel, and aluminum, while President Donald Trump mocked Canada as wanting state benefits without being a state.
