Canada hits US goods with tariffs up to 50% on 800 product categories

Canada has imposed tariffs of up to 50% on approximately 800 categories of US goods, effective September 8, in retaliation for US tariffs on Canadian products. The tariffs target steel and aluminum derivatives at 50%, plus dairy, fish, and seafood; 25% on cheese, wood, paper, and cardboard; and 15% on industrial machinery and robots. Canada's measures total 27.6 billion Canadian dollars, following failed negotiations. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said the tariffs protect Canadian workers and businesses. Prime Minister Mark Carney's government also announced a 7.5 billion Canadian dollar aid package for small businesses and affected workers.
