Canada Threatens to Cut Electricity to US as Trump Tariffs Escalate
Ontario Premier Doug Ford threatened Monday to cut electricity and critical mineral supplies to the US if President Donald Trump escalates trade tariffs, warning that "everything is on the table" in the dispute. Ford said Ontario could raise electricity prices or halt power exports, which supply 1.5 million US homes, while also threatening to withhold high-grade nickel and uranium. Trump had announced new 50% tariffs on Canadian autos, parts, and steel starting next year, accusing Canada of unfair trade practices. Ford accused Trump of wanting to "bleed out" Canadian industries and turn the country into a "vassal state," rejecting a preliminary deal Prime Minister Mark Carney considered. He also cited Ronald Reagan's opposition to tariffs, saying the former president would be "disgusted" with Trump's policies.
