Canada hits back with 15-50% tariffs on U.S. goods starting September 8

Canada announced Tuesday it will impose counter-tariffs of 15% to 50% on various U.S. products starting September 8, and released 4.6 billion euros to support affected sectors amid an escalating trade war. The tariffs target steel, dairy, agricultural equipment, paper, electronics, and appliances, matching U.S. tariffs "to the dollar." Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said Canada is "united in its response" to this "unprecedented challenge," following Washington's 50% duties on Canadian goods imposed over the weekend. Canada suspended negotiations, accusing the U.S. of seeking to "destroy our main industries." Industry Minister Mélanie Joly warned Canada will retaliate if auto tariffs reach 50% by January 2027. The support package includes 7.5 billion Canadian dollars for business liquidity, unemployment benefits, and export diversification.
