Ontario warns Canada could cut electricity and critical minerals to US
Prime Minister Mark Carney said Monday that U.S. trade demands confirmed Canada's fears that President Donald Trump was seeking to dismantle its auto industry, as Trump threatened new 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel. Ontario Premier Doug Ford warned Canada could cut off electricity and critical minerals to the U.S., saying "everything is on the table" if the dispute worsens. Carney said Canada remains willing to negotiate but only as a sovereign partner, not a subsidiary. Trump said the new tariffs would begin next year, criticizing Canada's "ridiculously high tariffs" on American farmers. Ford invoked Ronald Reagan, whose opposition to tariffs he previously featured in ads, saying Reagan "would be disgusted" with Trump's actions.
