Canada hits back with tariffs up to 50% on US goods

Canada announced Tuesday it will impose retaliatory tariffs of up to 50% on hundreds of American products, days after trade talks failed and the Trump administration levied punitive duties. The Canadian Finance Ministry said tariffs of 15%, 25%, and 50% will take effect September 8, matching US rates on targeted goods. The most significant measure doubles tariffs on American steel and aluminum to 50%, affecting items from household foil to railway locomotives and steel bridges. The new Canadian list covers imports worth about $20 billion, equal to the value of Canadian exports hit by US tariffs. A key dispute was the 25% US tariff on autos, a major Canadian export, which Canada will match with its own 25% counter-tariff while allowing duty-free imports for manufacturers within limits.
