Canada faces new US tariff threat after retaliation
The Trump administration is considering additional trade penalties against Canada after Prime Minister Mark Carney announced dollar-for-dollar retaliation to new US tariffs imposed Saturday. A White House official confirmed an administration response is expected. Canada announced Tuesday it will double counter-tariffs on US steel and aluminum to 50%, and add 50% duties on milk, furniture, clothing, electronics and other goods. These levies affect $20 billion in annual US exports, matching the value of Canadian goods hit by US tariffs. The new Canadian measures take effect Sept. 8 and will most impact exports from Ohio, Illinois, Pennsylvania, Michigan and California, potentially complicating Republican midterm election efforts. Ontario Premier Doug Ford called for a truce, urging both leaders to negotiate a fair deal.
