Canada hits back with $20B in duties on US goods

Canada announced retaliatory duties on $19.9 billion worth of US goods, effective September 8, following new US tariffs. The measures include rates of 15%, 25%, and 50% on various products. The duties respond to US tariffs of 50% imposed August 22 on $27.6 billion in Canadian goods. Canada also unveiled a $5.4 billion support package for businesses and workers, with Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne stating the countermeasures protect Canadians "dollar for dollar." The 50% duties target steel, aluminum, furniture, clothing, and footwear; 25% applies to appliances, dairy, fish, and some steel products. Canada previously imposed tariffs on $60 billion in consumer goods and autos, following a 2025 agreement and US Supreme Court ruling on earlier tariffs.
