Canada Prepares Targeted Retaliatory Tariffs Against US Auto Duties
Canada is preparing targeted retaliatory measures against the United States following President Trump's announcement of new 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles and trucks. The measures will be announced Tuesday by Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne and three other cabinet ministers. Prime Minister Mark Carney accused Washington of trying to subjugate Canada and destroy key industries such as automobiles, steel, and aluminum. He stated Canada may shift away from matching US tariffs dollar-for-dollar and instead use more targeted actions to protect Canadian workers and businesses. Carney said Canada will not accept a negotiating stance implying it is a subsidiary of the United States. The move follows the collapse of trade talks and Trump's threats of even worse consequences for Canadian leaders.
