Canada Retaliates With Tariffs on US Steel, Dairy and Other Goods

Canada unveiled $20 billion in retaliatory tariffs on U.S. goods Tuesday, targeting 700 products with duties up to 50 percent, escalating a trade dispute with Washington. The tariffs take effect September 8, following collapsed negotiations Friday and President Trump's threat of new 50 percent duties on Canadian vehicles, auto parts and steel. Prime Minister Mark Carney accused Washington of undermining Canada's sovereignty, while Trump mocked Carney and suggested renaming Lake Ontario. Specific duties include 50 percent on steel, aluminum, furniture and clothing; 25 percent on cheese, appliances and seafood; 15 percent on electronics and tools. Ontario Premier Doug Ford warned electricity and critical mineral exports could be restricted if tensions worsen.
