Carney says U.S. wants to destroy Canadian industries, weighs retaliation options

Prime Minister Mark Carney said Canada is preparing retaliatory options against new U.S. tariffs, while remaining open to talks if Washington respects Canadian sovereignty. He spoke Monday after President Donald Trump pledged to raise auto tariffs to 50 per cent starting Jan. 1. The threat follows 50 per cent tariffs on about US$20 billion of Canadian goods that took effect Saturday, after talks collapsed Friday. Carney promised counter-tariffs by Sept. 8 on U.S. steel, dairy, appliances and other products, but said the list is still being finalized. He emphasized targeted, intelligent responses. Trump called Carney "governor" on social media and warned consequences could be "far WORSE" if Canada doesn't comply. The new auto tariffs would disrupt a decades-old integrated supply chain. Canadian markets fell slightly Monday, with the loonie down about 0.7 per cent against the U.S. dollar.
