Atlantic Canadian businesses face new 50% tariffs on exports to U.S

A 50 per cent Canadian levy on exports to the U.S. covering items from honey to hockey sticks, wood, wigs, and wine is now in effect, threatening Atlantic Canadian businesses. Data from the Canadian Federation of Independent Business shows 40 per cent of exporting firms have products affected by these tariffs. Some businesses may become completely uncompetitive and unable to bring products to market, though Nova Scotia wine growers say their U.S. exports are minimal. Domestic wine sales have risen 14 per cent due to interprovincial agreements and removal of American alcohol from shelves. Business groups are calling for relief packages as Canada's counter-tariffs take effect Sept. 8.
