Canada-U.S. tariff talks stall as new 50% levy hits businesses
Talks between Canada and the U.S. stalled over the weekend, prompting President Donald Trump to impose a new 50 percent tariff on Canadian goods including dairy, alcohol, hockey equipment, and cement, affecting businesses on both sides of the border. Kyle Peacock of Peacock Tariff Consulting said the move was unsurprising, noting the items are "luxury" in trade terms but vital to affected businesses' livelihoods. He added that U.S. border states like Michigan and Maine are also feeling the strain, with long-term supplier relationships under pressure. Peacock warned that businesses must ensure strict compliance with trade documentation or face penalties, citing a $10,000 fine for minor routing errors. Residents expressed frustration over rising costs, while Trump hinted at possible auto sector tariffs by year's end.
