Trump threatens 50% tariffs on Canadian vehicles and steel
US President Donald Trump threatened Monday to raise tariffs on Canadian vehicles and steel to 50% starting January 1, 2027, intensifying the trade dispute with Canada. Trump stated on Truth Social that "Canada has been robbing the US for years," announcing the tariff increase on all cars, trucks, auto parts, and steel. These products already face sectoral tariffs of up to 25% on vehicles and 50% on steel, with some exceptions under the USMCA trade agreement. The threat follows failed Friday negotiations between Washington and Ottawa over additional tariffs on roughly $20 billion in Canadian goods, which took effect Saturday. Canada retaliated with surtaxes on US electronics, agricultural equipment, appliances, and steel starting September 8.
