Trump Raises Tariffs on Canadian Cars and Steel to 50% From 2027

US President Donald Trump announced Monday that tariffs on Canadian cars, trucks, auto parts, and steel will rise to 50% starting January 1, 2027, escalating a trade dispute with Ottawa. Trump made the announcement on Truth Social, accusing Canada of "ripping off" the US with high farm tariffs and a $60 billion deficit. He urged companies to "Build in the U.S." to avoid tariffs. The move follows Canada's plan to impose dollar-for-dollar retaliatory tariffs on US goods from September 8, covering steel, dairy, and electronics. The dispute began with a 25% US tariff on most Canadian imports in 2025, later extended to steel, aluminium, and autos. Canada responded with its own duties, some of which remain. The escalating measures threaten to raise costs for cross-border industries.
