Trump escalates Canada trade fight, threatens new tariffs

President Donald Trump escalated his trade dispute with Canada on Monday, calling it one of the "worst nations to deal with" and threatening new tariffs on Canadian goods. He also said Washington would "not treat Canada like a State anymore." Trump's comments on Truth Social accused Canada of "ripping off" the US with high tariffs on American farmers, citing a $60 billion trade deficit. He threatened 50% tariffs on cars, trucks, steel and automotive parts from January 2027, while offering zero tariffs for companies manufacturing in the US. The dispute follows Washington's 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian products after trade talks collapsed last week. Prime Minister Mark Carney announced retaliatory tariffs effective September 8, saying "You're at war when you get attacked. We got attacked."
