Carney likens US to Russia as unreliable partners

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney compared the United States to Russia on Monday, stating neither can be considered "reliable partners" for Canada. He made the remarks during a visit to Lévis, Quebec. Carney said Canada seeks reliable partners worldwide "except in the United States. Except in the United States and Russia." He reiterated he could cut or reduce energy exports south of the border as retaliation against the U.S. government, a shift from his late July stance when he saw no value in restricting energy exports. The comments come after Carney suspended trade negotiations with the U.S. on Friday, with new tariffs up to 50% on Canadian products. President Donald Trump announced 50% tariffs on Canadian auto parts and vehicles starting January 1, doubling existing rates. Ontario Premier Doug Ford called Trump a "loser" and urged provinces to unite on retaliation measures.
