Canada Hits Back With Up to 50% Tariffs on U.S. Goods

Canada has imposed retaliatory tariffs of up to 50 percent on U.S. imports, effective September 8, targeting goods worth 27.6 billion dollars. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said the tariffs will match U.S. duties on Canadian products. The escalation follows failed trade talks last week, with Washington imposing 50 percent tariffs on 20 billion dollars of Canadian goods including hockey sticks, furniture, honey, and wine. Prime Minister Mark Carney had announced countermeasures after the U.S. move. President Donald Trump also suggested renaming Lake Ontario to "Lake America" and threatened 50 percent auto and steel tariffs by January 2027. Canada remains the U.S.'s second-largest trading partner, with deep energy sector ties.
