Canada hits back with 15-50% tariffs on U.S. goods

Canada will impose tariffs of 15 to 50 percent on various American products starting September 8, retaliating against U.S. trade measures in an escalating commercial dispute. The Canadian tariffs target U.S. steel, dairy, agricultural equipment, paper, electronics, and appliances, matching dollar-for-dollar the U.S. surtaxes on Canadian goods that took effect Saturday. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said Canada is "united in its response" to this "unprecedented challenge." Prime Minister Mark Carney broke off trade negotiations Friday, calling U.S. conditions "unfair." Washington has since applied tariffs on 20 billion dollars of Canadian imports, and President Trump announced a hike on Canadian auto tariffs from 25 to 50 percent effective January 1. Canada pledged retaliation, unveiled a 7.5 billion Canadian dollar support package, and urged Canadians to "buy Canadian."
