Doug Ford calls Trump a 'loser' as Canada-US tariff war escalates
Ontario Premier Doug Ford called US President Donald Trump a "loser" and a "bully" on Monday, vowing to fight back against escalating tariff threats as the trade war between the two neighbours intensified. Ford made the remarks at a news conference in Hamilton, saying Canada would "fight with everything we have" and threatening to cut off critical minerals and electricity exports to the US. The comments came after Trump attacked Ford and Prime Minister Mark Carney on social media and threatened to raise tariffs on Canadian cars, steel and auto parts to 50% from January 2027. Canada is due to announce retaliatory measures on Tuesday, with Carney saying Ottawa may shift from matching US tariffs dollar for dollar to more targeted actions. The dispute follows the collapse of trade talks last week, with US tariffs on about $28 billion of Canadian goods already in effect.
