Canada hits back with tariffs on 700 US goods worth C$19.9B

Canada announced retaliatory tariffs on over 700 US goods worth approximately C$19.9 billion, effective September 8, escalating the trade war between the two nations. The tariffs, ranging from 15-50%, target steel, aluminum, dairy, appliances, machinery, paper, plastics, and electronics. Canada also unveiled a C$7.5 billion support package for small businesses affected by the dispute. This follows President Trump's 50% tariff on Canadian goods last Saturday. Tensions have risen further with Trump's plan to double auto tariffs in January 2027 and his recent remarks suggesting Canada become the 51st US state.
