Canada hits back with $20B in tariffs on US goods

Canada announced retaliatory tariffs on US imports worth about $20 billion, escalating the trade war with Washington. The tariffs, ranging from 15 to 50 percent, take effect September 8 and target roughly 700 product types. The measures follow the collapse of trade negotiations last week, which Canada said imposed unfair terms harming its industry. Highest tariffs hit smartphones, cosmetics, milk, furniture and paper, while 25 percent applies to seafood, appliances, cheeses, carpets and textiles. US President Donald Trump called Canada "most difficult and unreasonable," while Ontario Premier Doug Ford threatened further actions including restricting critical minerals or power exports. Canada also unveiled a multi-billion-dollar support package for affected businesses.
