Canada Imposes $20 Billion in Retaliatory Tariffs on U.S. Goods

Canada announced retaliatory tariffs on C$27.6 billion ($19.94 billion) of U.S. goods Tuesday, matching new U.S. duties dollar-for-dollar, and unveiled a C$7.5 billion support package for affected businesses and workers. The counter-tariffs take effect September 8, imposing duties of 15%, 25%, and 50% across 700 U.S. products. They follow President Donald Trump’s new 50% tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian imports that took effect Saturday after talks collapsed. Finance Minister François-Philippe Champagne said the measures protect workers, farmers, families, and businesses. The 50% tariffs target steel, aluminum, furniture, and clothing; 25% apply to cheese and appliances; 15% cover electronics and tools.
