US says Canada rejected trade deal for political reasons

The US Trade Representative suggested Canada had political motives for rejecting a bilateral trade deal, deepening the tariff war between the neighbors. Jamieson Greer said Washington offered concessions, including halved steel and aluminum tariffs, but Canada "wanted more." He noted Canada's upcoming elections may have influenced the decision. The failed talks led to US tariffs of 50% on about $20 billion of Canadian goods, effective Saturday. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney called the terms "unacceptable," citing threats to sovereignty, and announced matching tariffs. President Trump has since threatened 50% tariffs on all Canadian vehicles and steel from January 2027.
