Canada slaps tariffs on $19.9bn of US goods after trade talks fail

Canada has imposed retaliatory tariffs on 27.6 billion Canadian dollars ($19.9bn) worth of US goods, targeting over 700 products, effective September 8, following the collapse of trade talks with Washington. The tariffs, ranging from 15 to 50 percent, hit steel, aluminium, dairy, appliances, agricultural equipment, pulp, paper, plastics, and electronics. Canada also announced a 7.5 billion Canadian dollar ($5.42bn) support package for small and medium businesses affected by the dispute. The move responds to US President Donald Trump's 50 percent tariffs on Canadian goods and new auto duties. Trump has also made provocative remarks about annexing Canada, while US consumers face higher prices on 550 imported goods.
