Canada hits back with tariffs on 700 US goods

Canada announced retaliatory tariffs on over 700 US goods worth CAD 27.6 billion, matching the US’ 50 per cent tariff on Canadian goods that took effect August 22. The counter-tariffs, effective September 8, include 25 per cent duties on appliances, dairy, fish, and steel derivatives, and 50 per cent on steel, aluminium, furniture, and clothing. Canada also unveiled a CAD 7.5-billion assistance package for affected businesses and workers. The US imposed tariffs on about USD 20 billion of Canadian imports after trade talks failed, with further escalation planned for January 2027. Canada suspended negotiations, stating the US terms were not in its national interest.
