China's envoy sets out non-negotiable red lines ahead of Xi-Trump summit

China's ambassador to the US warned that Beijing's red lines on Taiwan and human rights are non-negotiable, days before President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump are set to meet in Washington for high-stakes talks. Ambassador Xie Feng, writing in the People's Daily, outlined four red lines—Taiwan, democracy and human rights, development paths and systems, and development rights—that cannot be challenged. He urged Washington to abandon what he called manufactured justifications to restrain China's rise. A separate commentary in the same newspaper blamed US "erroneous perceptions" and attachment to "strategic competition" for recurring bilateral difficulties, urging Washington to demonstrate policy continuity and honour its commitments to stabilise the relationship.
