Trump and Xi Meet at White House to Discuss Trade, Taiwan, and AI

President Donald Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping opened formal talks at the White House on Thursday, with Trump describing a "truly great friendship" between the two leaders as they addressed trade, Taiwan, and artificial intelligence. The two sides entered the talks having already extended by two months a one-year trade truce due to expire on 10 November, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirming the extension. Xi said competition between the countries "should be a healthy one and should be kept within bounds." Tariffs have swung sharply over the past year, with U.S. rates peaking at 145 percent before falling to roughly 47 percent after a prior meeting. Taiwan remains the most sensitive issue, while the visit culminates in a state dinner attended by tech executives including Amazon's Jeff Bezos and Nvidia's Jensen Huang.
