Trump and Xi to Discuss AI as Trade Truce Extension Announced

President Donald Trump said artificial intelligence will be a major topic in his Thursday talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping, adding that both sides want to maintain the current situation. Trump made the comments in a social media post, calling AI "Super Intelligence." Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the two sides agreed to extend the trade truce forged last year in Busan, South Korea, shortly after Xi arrived in Washington. Bessent said a larger agreement could be reached by January or the truce could be extended again, though the stopgap was shorter than both sides had suggested. Trump has argued China has incentive to help end the conflict with Iran, but Beijing has condemned U.S. and Israeli military action. China also wants Washington to permanently halt Taiwan arms sales, with Trump previously describing such sales as a "very good negotiating chip."
