Xi Jinping seeks US partnership during state visit

Chinese President Xi Jinping, during his three-day state visit to the US, called for a partnership between the two nations, stating they should be "partners, not rivals." The US government announced a two-month postponement of additional tariffs on Chinese imports until January 10. US President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania personally welcomed Xi and his wife Peng Liyuan on the tarmac at Joint Base Andrews, a departure from protocol. Xi said both nations' goals could proceed hand-in-hand, emphasizing cooperation and managing differences. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent confirmed the tariff extension, following meetings with Chinese Vice Premier He Lifeng. The tariff dispute escalated last year, with US duties reaching 145% and Chinese counter-tariffs up to 125%. A 90-day suspension was agreed in May and extended, set to expire in November. The visit also covers AI, the Iran war, and Russia's Ukraine invasion, with a state banquet featuring tech leaders like Elon Musk and Mark Zuckerberg.
