Xi and Trump agree: US-China should be partners, not rivals

Chinese President Xi Jinping received a rare planeside welcome from US President Donald Trump in Washington on Thursday, after which Xi affirmed the two nations should be "partners rather than rivals." He also expressed interest in discussing the global situation with Trump. The comments followed an agreement by top officials from both countries to extend a trade truce until January, scaling back tariffs and refraining from new trade restrictions. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced the extension, noting it could give leaders more time to address issues. Bessent said he was unsure whether a bigger deal could be reached or if the current one would be rolled over. The extension to Jan. 10 allows for discussions at upcoming summits in China in November and Florida in December.
