China's envoy warns of 'red lines' before Trump-Xi summit

China's ambassador to the US warned of "red lines" on Taiwan, human rights, and other issues that cannot be crossed, ahead of this week's Washington summit between President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump. Writing in the People's Daily, Ambassador Xie Feng said the US should stop using national security and other pretexts to constrain China, adding that cooperation benefits both sides while confrontation harms them. He identified four red lines: Taiwan, democracy and human rights, development paths, and development rights. The US is Taiwan's most important arms supplier despite lacking formal ties. A separate commentary in the same newspaper blamed US "erroneous perceptions" and its focus on strategic competition for recent bilateral difficulties, urging Washington to maintain policy continuity and honor commitments.
