China's ambassador warns US against crossing 'red lines' on Taiwan and human rights before Trump-Xi summit

China's ambassador to the US warned Wednesday that China has red lines on Taiwan, human rights and other issues that cannot be crossed, ahead of a summit between President Xi Jinping and President Donald Trump in Washington this week. Ambassador Xie Feng, writing in the People's Daily, said managing differences hinges on good faith and urged the US to stop using pretexts like national security and forced labour to constrain China. He stated that cooperation benefits both nations while confrontation harms both, and that China's sovereignty and development interests cannot be violated. A separate commentary in the same newspaper attributed recent strains in bilateral ties to US misperceptions of China and its attachment to strategic competition. It called on both sides to preserve hard-won momentum, with the US urged to maintain policy continuity and inject certainty into the relationship.
