Chinese Ambassador Urges Constructive US Ties Ahead of Xi Visit

Chinese Ambassador to the US Xie Feng published a signed article in the People's Daily on September 23 ahead of President Xi Jinping's upcoming state visit to the US, framing the trip as a milestone for bilateral ties and calling for the implementation of a constructive and strategically stable relationship. The article states Xi's visit, the first state visit to the US in 11 years and the second exchange of state visits within six months, builds on the consensus reached during his May meeting with President Trump in Beijing. Xie emphasized that cooperation, not decoupling, serves mutual interests, and urged both sides to expand collaboration across military, law enforcement, health, agriculture, and people-to-people exchanges while managing competition constructively. Xie also stressed the need to respect China's core interests, including on Taiwan, and to avoid conflict, citing growing American public goodwill toward China and the early completion of an initiative to host 50,000 US youth over five years as positive signs. He described 2026 as a pivotal year for the relationship.
