Wife of Detained US Scientist Urges Trump to Raise Case With Xi

The wife of detained Chinese American seismologist Youlin Chen hopes President Donald Trump will raise her husband's case during his summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, nearly two years after Chen's detention in China. Chen, 54, is one of two American citizens the U.S. considers wrongfully detained in China. Chen was detained in November 2024 by Chinese state security agents at a Beijing airport and later charged with espionage, which his family denies. His wife, Yufang Rong, said Chen's work on earthquake and nuclear test detection is transparent, and she speculates Beijing targeted him for his expertise. She has only learned of his condition through U.S. consular visits. The other detained American is Min Zin, a Myanmar politics scholar held since June on suspicion of endangering national security. U.S. lawmakers introduced a bipartisan resolution last week condemning the detentions, while Rong expressed confidence that Trump's personal involvement could lead to Chen's release.
