Wife of detained US scientist hopes Trump raises case with Xi

The wife of detained Chinese American seismologist Youlin Chen hopes President Donald Trump will raise her husband's case during his summit with Chinese leader Xi Jinping, nearly two years after Chen was detained in China on espionage charges his family denies. Chen, 54, was detained in November 2024 by Chinese state security agents at a Beijing airport after a personal trip to visit his parents. His wife, Yufang Rong, said Chen's work on detecting nuclear explosions through seismic data is open and transparent, and she speculates Beijing targeted him for his expertise. Chen and Min Zin, 53, are the only two American citizens the U.S. government considers wrongfully detained in China. Rong said Trump spoke with Xi about Chen during his May visit to Beijing, and she believes another mention could resolve the case. Chen has diabetes, high blood pressure, and high cholesterol, and Rong worries about his health and access to medication. A bipartisan group of U.S. lawmakers introduced a resolution last week condemning the detentions and urging their release.
