Brazil votes in Lula-Bolsonaro runoff election
Brazilians are voting Sunday in a presidential runoff between leftist incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and far-right Sen. Flávio Bolsonaro, a son of imprisoned former President Jair Bolsonaro. Bolsonaro, an ally of U.S. President Donald Trump, led Lula by over 2.2 million votes in the first round, with more than 33 million of nearly 160 million registered voters abstaining. The candidates hold opposing views on issues including U.S.-Brazil relations, climate change, and social welfare. A Bolsonaro win would mark a rightward shift in Latin America's largest economy, following Trump ally victories in Chile, Peru, and Colombia this year. Brazil's fully electronic voting system counts results locally and transmits encrypted data to the capital, with polls closing at 5 p.m. Brasilia time.
