Brazil's Runoff Election: Lula and Bolsonaro Deadlocked at 50-50
Brazil's second presidential election round takes place Sunday, with polls closing at 9 PM Swedish time. The race is exceptionally tight, with incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and challenger Flávio Bolsonaro each holding 50 percent support in a fresh opinion poll. Flávio Bolsonaro, 45, son of imprisoned former president Jair Bolsonaro, led the first round with 47 percent against Lula's 45 percent, but neither secured a majority. Lula, 80, has since closed the gap ahead of the runoff. Jair Bolsonaro, serving a 27-year sentence for a 2022 coup attempt, designated his eldest son as his successor from his 12-square-meter prison cell. Flávio said Brazil cannot endure four more years under Lula's leadership.
