Brazilian Senator Flavio Bolsonaro contests election loss to Lula
Brazilian senator Flavio Bolsonaro refuses to recognize his election defeat to President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva and is seeking to annul the result. He claims the Supreme Court illegally changed voting rules at the last minute. Justice Cristiano Zanin allowed polling stations to remain open two hours longer after Lula's campaign complained about public transport problems. Bolsonaro's own team had also requested extra voting time in southern areas with heavy rain, though electoral authorities say the extension did not affect the outcome. Lula won with 51.8 percent against 48.2 percent for Bolsonaro, the eldest son of former President Jair Bolsonaro, who also disputed his 2022 loss and was later sentenced to 27 years in prison for plotting a coup. Regional leaders have congratulated Lula, while President Trump has not yet responded.
