Brazil runoff: Lula leads Bolsonaro by 2 points with 73% counted
With over 73% of votes counted in Brazil's presidential runoff, incumbent Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva leads with 50% of the vote, surpassing challenger Flavio Bolsonaro by more than two percentage points. Lula's platform includes creating a Public Security Ministry, achieving zero deforestation by 2030, and increasing taxes on high-income sectors. Bolsonaro proposes classifying criminal groups as narcoterrorist organizations, lowering the criminal responsibility age to 16, and building five new maximum-security prisons. The election marks a rematch of sorts for Lula, who defeated Flavio's father, Jair Bolsonaro, in the 2022 runoff. Flavio's campaign is also defined by his defense of a pardon for his father and other convicts from the January 8, 2023 attacks.
