U.S. trade envoy disputes Canada's account of failed talks

U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer disputes Canada's claim that last-minute American demands derailed trade talks, instead blaming new Canadian requests for the deal's collapse last week. Greer told CBC News that Canadian negotiators returned from Ottawa with additional requests after an Aug. 18 tentative agreement, which he called the best deal available to any country. He denied U.S. interference by President Trump and rejected Canadian concerns about trade restrictions, French language protections, and other issues. Canada announced retaliatory tariffs on American products Tuesday following the failed negotiations, which also triggered new U.S. tariffs. Greer confirmed no open communication channels exist with Canada, and he did not rule out further U.S. measures if Ottawa retaliates again.
