Canada to Hit Back With Dollar-for-Dollar Tariffs on U.S. Goods

Canada is preparing to impose countertariffs on U.S. goods starting Sept. 8, responding dollar-for-dollar to President Donald Trump's 50-per-cent tariffs on $27.6-billion of Canadian exports. The measures include raising existing steel and aluminum duties to 50 per cent. Canada's retaliation list targets both previously tariffed products and goods entering duty-free, including networking equipment, honey, and consumer items like golf clubs and furniture. Ottawa announced a $7.5-billion support package, though Canadian consumers will likely feel price impacts from reduced competition and importer costs. The tariffs will affect U.S. states unevenly, with Maine's lobster exports initially targeted before seafood was removed from the list. Ohio faces the largest exposure with $3.2-billion of tariff-covered exports, while Pennsylvania's motorcycle shipments face new duties.
