Trump weighs new tariffs on Canada as trade dispute escalates

The unnamed official told Bloomberg Tuesday that the administration will respond to Canada taxing approximately $20 billion in American products, with potential escalation ranging from higher tariffs to other trade actions. Trump hinted at further action Wednesday, saying "it's time to teach Canada you can't do this anymore." The trade conflict erupted last week after negotiations collapsed, with Trump imposing 50 percent tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian imports under the 1930 Tariff Act. Canada matched with similar levies on American exports effective September 8, while Ontario Premier Doug Ford threatened to cut off U.S. access to electricity and minerals.
