Saskatchewan slaps 50% tariff on American liquor in trade retaliation

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe announced a 50 per cent reciprocal tax on American alcohol, effective Sept. 8, in response to U.S. tariffs on Canadian goods. The measure aims to protect the province amid escalating trade tensions. The tax follows U.S. tariffs implemented Aug. 22 that levied 50 per cent on Canadian alcohol. Moe said the province will not ban U.S. liquor, leaving consumer choice intact, noting American liquor sales have already dropped 40 per cent. Moe opposes export tariffs on potash and oil, citing immediate job losses and harm to Eastern Canada. He emphasized supporting selected counter-tariffs while urging both governments to return to negotiations for a trade agreement.
