Saskatchewan hits U.S. alcohol with 50% retaliatory tariffs

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe announced counter-tariffs on U.S. alcohol products Wednesday, matching the U.S. tariffs of 50 per cent, effective Sept. 8. The province supports Ottawa's targeted counter-tariffs on $27.6 billion of U.S. goods, announced Tuesday, after trade negotiations collapsed over the weekend. Moe called U.S. actions "encroaching on international trade agreements" and unacceptable. The new tariffs cover about $1.5 billion, or 11.3 per cent, of Saskatchewan's annual U.S. imports. The province is analyzing impacts on jobs and consumer prices while reviewing federal support measures.
