Saskatchewan Imposes 50% Tariff on U.S. Alcohol

Saskatchewan Premier Scott Moe announced Wednesday a 50% tariff on American alcohol, escalating Canada's response in its trade war with the United States. The measure takes effect Sept. 8. Saskatchewan and Alberta are the only provinces still selling U.S. wine, beer, and spirits, while all others have removed them from shelves, a point of irritation for President Donald Trump. Moe backed Prime Minister Mark Carney's retaliatory tariffs on $20 billion of U.S. products, noting the U.S. remains Saskatchewan's largest trading partner. Moe said U.S. alcohol sales in the province have already plummeted 40% due to existing counter-tariffs. He emphasized the need for self-protection, stating Canada did not initiate the current situation.
