Prairie provinces split on U.S. tariffs as Trump escalates trade war

Canadian provinces are divided on how to respond to the escalating trade war with the U.S., as President Donald Trump said it is "time to teach Canada you can't do this anymore." Saskatchewan announced a 50 per cent tariff on American liquor, while Alberta urged de-escalation. The U.S. imposed 50 per cent tariffs on $20 billion of Canadian imports after trade talks collapsed, and Canada matched with retaliatory tariffs on $28 billion of U.S. goods. Trump also threatened to raise auto tariffs to 50 per cent in January. A "buy Canadian" movement has resurged, with grocers labelling domestic products. Prime Minister Mark Carney will address the European Parliament next month as Canada seeks to diversify trade relationships beyond the U.S.
