Trump warns Canada: 'Time to teach you can't do this anymore'
US President Donald Trump said Wednesday it was "time to teach Canada you can't do this anymore," days after trade talks between the neighboring countries collapsed, escalating a tariff dispute. Trump imposed new 50 percent tariffs on US$20 billion of Canadian imports Saturday after talks broke down, and Canada retaliated Tuesday with matching duties on about US$20 billion of US goods, effective Sep 8. Trump also announced 50 percent tariffs on Canadian autos and parts effective Jan 1. US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said there are currently no open channels with Canada, while White House adviser Peter Navarro predicted any future deal will be worse than the one rejected. Canada cited the US refusal to extend tariff relief on medium- and heavy-duty vehicles as a key sticking point.
