France protests: Over 1,000 arrested as riots hit multiple cities
Police in France have arrested approximately 1,200 people following nationwide protests on Saturday, October 17, that escalated into riots, looting, and violent clashes in several cities. The demonstrations were against the high cost of living. Between 550,000 and 800,000 people took part in protests across France. Violence included the burning of Limoges' 19th-century city hall, an attack on Marseille's town hall, and a fire at Lyon's tourist office. Paris saw 855 arrests, with widespread property damage and looting reported. The unrest occurred amid ongoing protests by civil servants, union activists, and students demanding higher wages and better study conditions. President Emmanuel Macron vowed to punish those responsible for vandalism, while Paris, Lyon, and Marseille mayors requested a meeting with Prime Minister Sebastien Lecornu.
